Building Learning Power

Manjusri Secondary School adapted the Building Learning Power (BLP) program based on the work of Professor Guy Claxton. The rationale for adopting this program and customizing his work for the needs of our students is in recognition that all students need to develop their skills in learning how to learn effectively. BLP is aimed to help Manjusrians develop the 4 learning muscles, namely R esilience, R esourcefulness, R eciprocity and R eflection ( 4R s). In short, BLP is about helping young people to become better learners, both in school and out.

BLP is about creating a culture in classrooms - and in the school more widely - that systematically cultivates habits and attitudes that enable young people to face difficulty and uncertainty calmly, confidently and creatively.

Students who are more confident of their own learning ability learn faster and learn better. They concentrate more, think harder and find learning more enjoyable. They do better in their tests and external examinations. And they are easier and more satisfying to teach.

Building Learning Power prepares youngsters better for an uncertain future. Manjusri Secondary School believes in the need to educate our young not just for exam results but for lifelong learning.Learning to deep learn, armed with the essential character trait of grit, tenacity, perseverance, and resilience; and the ability to make learning an integral part of living. BLP builds character.

To thrive in the 21 st century, it is not enough to leave school with a clutch of examination certificates. Students need to have learnt how to be tenacious and resourceful, imaginative and logical, self-disciplined and self-aware, collaborative and inquisitive to be a Passionate Learner and a Compassionate Leader.

For the lower secondary, BLP was explicitly taught during curriculum hours once weekly. Explicit teaching packages were designed in-house, spearheaded by 10 BLP Champions, comprising Senior Teachers (STs) and Heads of Department (HODs).

Focus was given to display BLP banners at the amphitheatre to act as reminders as well as to use it as the school’s focal point where BLP awareness is created.
